  1. You say “eliminate plant based foods.” I am allergic to dairy and am. Calcium oxalate stone former. How do I eliminate plant based foods and eat a healthy diet? Eat nothing but animal protein?

    1. Hi David!

One misconception in a zero-oxalate diet (a.k.a. eating only animal products) is that you will not get the recommended daily intake of all the macro and micronutrients your body need such as vitamin C. However, this is a complete misconception.

For instance, throughout history, sailors who developed scurvy found that the real reason for their disease is a diet rich in carbs and sun/air-dried meat. Sun/air-drying, unlike freeze-drying, degrades the nutrients in foods. Plus, glucose and vitamin C compete in the transport process in the body.

In fact, ruminant meats like beef and venison are packed with protein, B vitamins (especially B12, you only get this in animal products), vitamin A (richly found in liver), vitamin C (richly found in beef spleen, etc.), vitamin D, biotin, iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, selenium, choline and many more.

Also, since you are allergic to dairy, there are other sources of calcium that you can include in your diet. You can get up to 1000 mg per 1/2 egg shell, one serving of bone meals and bone marrow. This will provide you enough to reach the RDA of 1,200mg.

Mainstream media had been saying that meat only have protein and fats, but it’s a complete disinformation. Also, it’s true that dietary strategy can be different depending on stone type; however, for the majority (80%) who are calcium-oxalate stone-formers, avoiding plant foods is the best option.

Truth is, even if you are on a low-oxalate diet, oxalate can still accumulate in your kidneys. That’s because calcium and oxalates are absorbed in the gut at different rates. It isn’t reliable to say that they will bind there perfectly to send oxalates on your excrement. Calcium are absorbed way faster at around 2-3 hours, while oxalates may stay in your gut for days. That means they still have the chance to meet in your kidneys and bind there. So, to be safer, avoiding plant foods is the best way to go.
